About us

sml penguinWhitby ArtNet is a self funding, non profit making organisation which was established by a group of Whitby artists to promote the awareness and practice of the arts in and around Whitby. This charming town, with its numerous historical connections and proximity to both moors and coast, has long provided inspiration to artists.

Arts represented include paintings (watercolours, oils, acrylics and mixed media), ceramics, stained glass, wrought iron, textiles, batik and much more.

Sampled artist: Vicki Rylands

Inspired by the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement, and driven by the exciting processes of ceramics, I ally the simplicity of organic forms and the complexity of glaze patterns to produce beautiful yet functional stoneware vessels. These are thrown on a wheel and finished in rich red iron and rutile glazes. A reduction firing up to 1280'C allows flowing patterns of amber, blue and purple to emerge. My passion for Raku, with its unpredictability and danger, has led me to create ornamental and individual pieces. These are finished with white or turquoise crackle glazes, or decorated using a slip resist technique which results in unique smoke markings on a burnished surface.
